A Kid’s Trip. A Mom’s Gesture.

This afternoon I was fixing my trip to Bangkok next month. I needed some help about the flight schedule so I went to the cube of an officemate, Jen, who will be in Bangkok during the same time. Mayhaps she can teach me how things work.

I was telling her that since she’s been to BKK a lot of times maybe she can tour me around the city. She replied with a very nonchalant, “Yep, Claire already told me to take care of you.”

With big round eyes and unbelieving expression, I commented, “Naaah, you’re joking. She can’t have said that.”

Honestly though, I was really touched when Jen told the story of how Claire talked to her about my trip. I didn’t expect Claire to care much about me, so much to actually talk to someone and tell that someone to take care of me during a trip. It seems to be so such a trivial thing to care much about.

Claire is a tough love kind of mentor. She’s the type that won’t tolerate any form of self-inflicted pain. She can be very honest that you hate her for telling the truth (and then a few minutes after, you realize that she’s so right and you begin to feel embarrassed about how you acted). She’s so very sweetly bitchy that you love her so much. She’s not very vocal about how she feels, nor does she show her emotions much.

The point that she talked to Jen about my trip to Bangkok, albeit casually, says a lot of things. And for all those, I say Claire cares.

As Jen very aptly said, “Oh diba? Nanay na nanay lang.” (See? So like a mom.)
